Shell and tube heat exchangers
Heat exchangers
Shell and tube heat exchangers for process plants
Shell and tube heat exchangers are the reference solution for heat transfer at high pressures and temperatures in the Oil & Gas, Power, chemical and process sectors. We supply complete units, replacement tube bundles made to drawing or from a sample, and retubing, in all TEMA configurations and in any material, from carbon steel to nickel alloys.

How it works
One fluid flows inside a bundle of tubes, the other in the volume between the tubes and the outer cylindrical shell. Heat crosses the tube wall with no contact between the two fluids. The tubes are fixed to the tubesheets by expansion and/or welding, while the baffles guide the shell-side flow, increasing turbulence and the heat transfer coefficient. A robust architecture that handles surfaces from a few m² to thousands of m², high pressures and temperatures from cryogenic to over 500 °C.

Replacement tube bundles and retubing
In the event of perforation, corrosion or end of life of the bundle, it is almost never necessary to replace the whole unit. In removable configurations we supply a replacement tube bundle built to drawing, from a sample or by dimensional survey, keeping the existing shell; alternatively we arrange complete retubing, including an upgrade of the tube material to increase corrosion resistance. It is the fastest and most economical way to bring the plant back on line, especially during scheduled shutdowns.
To provide a quotation, all we need is the original construction drawing, or the make, model and serial number from the unit’s nameplate.

Frequently asked questions
How does a shell and tube heat exchanger work?
One fluid flows inside a bundle of tubes, the other in the volume between the tubes and the outer shell. Heat passes through the tube wall with no contact between the two fluids, while the internal baffles guide the shell-side flow, increasing turbulence and therefore the efficiency of the heat transfer.
What is the difference between a shell and tube and a plate heat exchanger?
The shell and tube exchanger withstands much higher pressures and temperatures and is suitable for dirty or aggressive fluids, thanks to the removable configurations that allow cleaning and inspection. The plate heat exchanger is more compact and efficient for a given surface area, but has lower pressure and temperature limits and is more sensitive to fouling.
What determines the price of a shell and tube heat exchanger?
Mainly the heat transfer surface, the materials of the tubes, tubesheets and shell (carbon steel, stainless steel, duplex, titanium, nickel alloys), the TEMA construction type, the design pressure and temperature and the certifications required, such as PED or INAIL. For a reliable quotation we need the process data for both fluids: flow rates, inlet and outlet temperatures, pressures and allowable pressure drops.
Is it possible to replace only the tube bundle without changing the exchanger?
Yes. In removable-bundle configurations (U-tube or floating head) the replacement tube bundle can be rebuilt to drawing, from a sample or by dimensional survey, keeping the existing shell. It is often the fastest and most economical solution in the event of corrosion or tube perforation, and it also allows a material upgrade.
Which materials are used for corrosive fluids or seawater?
For corrosive services we use stainless steels 316L, duplex and superduplex, titanium, copper-nickel 90/10 or nickel alloys such as Hastelloy, Incoloy and Monel, depending on the fluid, the temperature and the presence of chlorides. We support you in selecting the optimal material in relation to the expected service life and budget.
