A cost-effective and versatile solution for measuring liquids, gases, steam and high-temperature dusty gases. They cover diameters from DN 50 up to DN 2000 (and beyond on request), with temperatures from -200 °C to +1150 °C and pressures up to 320 bar.

Thanks to a measurement profile averaged across multiple points, the averaging Pitot tube also requires shorter straight runs (7D/3D) and produces a minimal pressure drop — making it the ideal choice for retrofits on existing plants.

How it works

The averaging Pitot tube is inserted across the pipe. It measures the difference between total pressure (the impact of the flow) and static pressure: this difference is proportional to the square of the fluid velocity and, consequently, to the volumetric flow rate.

Unlike a traditional single-point Pitot tube, the averaging model has multiple sampling ports along the whole cross section of the pipe. In this way it produces a differential pressure averaged over the entire flow profile.

The differential pressure signal is then transmitted to a DP transmitter, which calculates the flow rate. Thanks to its simple construction, no pipe cutting is required: a single flange or a welded connection is enough.

How does a Pitot tube flow meter work?

The Pitot tube measures the difference between total pressure (facing the flow) and static pressure. This difference is proportional to the square of the velocity and, consequently, to the volumetric flow rate. The averaging model has multiple sampling ports along the whole cross section of the pipe, therefore producing a measurement averaged over the complete profile rather than at a single point.

What is the difference between a single-point and an averaging Pitot tube?

A traditional Pitot tube measures velocity at a single point of the cross section. As a result, it is prone to error when the flow profile is not uniform. An averaging Pitot tube, by contrast, has multiple ports distributed across the entire cross section and produces an averaged differential pressure. Thanks to this approach, the measurement is far more accurate and requires shorter straight runs.

Which fluids is the Pitot tube suitable for?

It is suitable for clean liquids, gases, air, saturated and superheated steam, nitrogen, hydrocarbons and seawater. It can also be used with high-temperature dusty gases, thanks to the version with an automatic purge system. It is not recommended, however, for fluids with a high content of suspended solids, which could clog the sampling ports.

Why choose a Pitot tube for large diameters?

Above DN 300, solutions such as magnetic or Coriolis meters become very expensive or technically impractical. The averaging Pitot tube, by contrast, covers diameters up to DN 2000 and beyond with contained installation and maintenance costs. Thanks to its simple construction, it requires neither pipe cutting nor external impulse lines.

Can it be installed on existing plants without stopping the process?

Yes. The retractable (hot-tap) version allows the sensor to be installed and removed without interrupting the process and without shutting down the plant. This makes it the preferred solution for retrofits on existing pipework, especially in plants that cannot afford production downtime.

Which communication protocols does it support?

The DP transmitter paired with the Pitot tube supports HART 7, PROFIBUS PA, Foundation Fieldbus and a 4–20 mA output. Versions with a Bluetooth display are also available for remote configuration and verification, including in areas that are difficult to access.
